Introduction : Harry Golden. Harry Lewis Golden was an American writer and newspaper publisher. Probably the most famous Jew in North Carolina, Harry Golden raised his voice for civil rights for a quarter of a century as the publisher of an Israeli newspaper.
Early life and education : He was born on May 8, 1902, in Shittle Mikulints, then part of Austria-Hungary, Ukraine. His father's name is Leib and his mother's name is Nuchama. His parents were Austrian and his mother Romanian. He became the editor of the Jewish Daily Forward. He worked as a newspaper vendor for some time but was interested in Georgette socialism from his adolescence. He became a stockbroker but lost his job in a 1929 accident. Mail withheld funds from his vested funds to plead guilty to fraud charges and caused losses to investors. As a result, he was held in a federal prison in Georgia.
Career : He has been a Charlotte journalist since 1941, writing against racist segregation and the then-Jim Crow laws. Golden's books include three essays on Israel and a biography of his friend the poet Carl Sandberg. One of those collections, in America alone, was the basis of a play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee.
