Introduction : Paolo Coelho is a Brazilian writer. At the age of 36, he started writing in Spain and wrote his first book, The Pilgrimage. And his second book, The Alchemist, which made him famous. He has sold 35 million copies and now writes about one book every two years.
Early life : He was born on August 24, 1947, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and attended a Jesuit school, where his parents were devout Catholics. He wanted to be a writer from a young age but his parents did not encourage him. He later enrolled in law school and became involved in gender, drugs and rock 'n' roll in the 1970s. He wrote songs for Brazilian musicians in protest of the country's military rule. He was imprisoned three times for his political activism and there he confessed to torture.
Career : He changed his life during a visit to Spain in 1986 at the age of 39 after he had devoted himself to many professions. He traveled more than 500 miles on the road to the Catholic shrine Santiago de Compostela, during which he was inspired to write an autobiographical account of the trail in Portuguese, The Pilgrim. He even left his job to devote himself to writing. In 1987,he wrote a new book, The Alchemist, which was a huge success. His 26 books have sold more than 65 million copies in at least 59 languages.
